Traveling together is one of the best ways to strengthen bonds, create unforgettable memories, and discover new cultures. This time, my wife and I set our sights on Kolkata, the cultural capital of India — and we were not disappointed. With a mix of history, shopping, food, and affordable comfort, Kolkata delivered a travel experience that we’ll remember for a long time.

Getting There: Dhaka to Kolkata by Bus
We opted for the direct bus from Dhaka to Kolkata, a popular route for Bangladeshi travelers. The journey was smooth, cost-effective, and fairly comfortable. Immigration and customs at the border (Benapole-Petrapole) were straightforward, and before we knew it, we were cruising into the vibrant streets of Kolkata.
Where We Stayed – 6 Nights of Comfort and Convenience
We stayed in Kolkata for six nights, giving us enough time to settle in, explore different parts of the city, and truly soak in its charm. The hotels in Kolkata are quite affordable, especially compared to other metro cities. Whether you’re on a tight budget or looking for a mid-range stay, you’ll find plenty of great options.
Our hotel was clean, centrally located, and close to transport links — perfect for couples who want comfort without breaking the bank.
Food, Food, and More Food!
If you love food, Kolkata will spoil you.
We indulged in everything from street-side phuchka and kathi rolls to famous biryanis, sweets like roshogolla and sandesh, and even enjoyed some relaxing meals at nice cafés and restaurants. Every corner of the city smells like something delicious is cooking, and we didn’t waste any chance to try something new.
Must-try foods in Kolkata:
- Phuchka (Kolkata-style pani puri)
- Kathi roll from Nizam’s or Kusum
- Kolkata Biryani (don’t forget the aloo!)
- Roshogolla, Mishti Doi, Sandesh
- Mughlai paratha
- Chai from street stalls served in clay cups
A City Made for Shopping
One of the highlights of our trip was shopping. Kolkata is a paradise for shopaholics — especially if you’re into clothes, accessories, souvenirs, and books.
We visited popular spots like:
- New Market – For clothes, bags, jewelry, and souvenirs at bargain prices.
- Gariahat & Hatibagan – Traditional sarees, bangles, and household items.
- South City Mall & Quest Mall – Modern shopping experience with branded stores and movie theatres.
- College Street – Heaven for book lovers.
We bought quite a few things for ourselves and gifts for our loved ones back home.
Exploring the City – From Newtown to the Old Charm
We explored various parts of the city, including the fast-growing and modern area of Newtown. It’s clean, organized, and filled with cafés, malls, parks, and tech offices — a great contrast to the old, colonial charm of central Kolkata.
Other places we enjoyed:
- Victoria Memorial – A must-visit symbol of the city’s colonial past.
- Park Street – For food, music, and nightlife.
- Howrah Bridge – Iconic and beautiful, especially at night.
- Eco Park in Newtown – Perfect for a romantic walk or paddle boating.
- Princep Ghat – Sunset views by the river with food stalls all around.
We also caught a couple of movies during our stay — a perfect break after a day of exploring. The cinema experience in Kolkata is very affordable and comfortable, and subtitles made it easy to follow.
Why We Loved Kolkata
Kolkata is a city full of culture, chaos, warmth, and soul. It may not be as flashy as other metros, but it has a personality that grows on you with every passing hour. The people are friendly, the cost of living is low, and everything from transport to food and entertainment is budget-friendly.
What we loved most:
- Affordable and easy couple travel destination
- Incredible variety of food
- Plenty of things to do, both modern and traditional
- A deep sense of history and culture in every corner
- Easy visa process and convenient travel from Bangladesh
Returning Home – With Bags Full and Hearts Fuller
After six beautiful days, we boarded the direct bus back to Dhaka — a little tired, but completely fulfilled. Kolkata gave us a perfect mix of fun, relaxation, shopping, food, and couple time. It’s one of those cities we’d love to visit again, maybe during Durga Puja next time!
If you’re planning a couple getaway from Bangladesh that’s fun, budget-friendly, and packed with experiences — Kolkata should be at the top of your list.
